Dumpster Fire
A struggling actress and a homeless man share a special bond on a lunch break.
Interview with Natalie Rodriguez (Writer/Director) and Alexandra Almendarez (Actress/Producer)
Why are you making your film?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: I am thrilled to announce that production for Dumpster Fire kicks off this summer! Our campaign launches today on Seed & Spark, and we are excited to share this journey with you all.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Natalie Rodriguez, who is the writer, director and executive producer of Dumpster Fire, wanted to make a film inspired by the hit series, The Bear, and she asked me to come on board as the leading lady and as a co-producer. I'm excited to help tell this story because it goes on the journey of Trisha, a waitress and actress who is navigating the ups and downs of her professional and personal life. It's a story about following your dreams, living in your authenticity, and being present in the moment.
Imagine I’m a member of the audience. Why should I watch this film?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: Life is challenging, but there is always hope on the horizon. Dumpster Fire is more than a film; it is a beacon for the unheard and a testament to resilience. It is a story about chasing dreams despite the odds. In the midst of life's trials, it is also a gentle reminder that it is okay to take things slow and embrace the slow. And let Sewer Bob's mantra—"Eliminate negativity, and forge ahead"—inspire you. Support our film, not just for the artistry, but for the shared experience of finding light in the darkest of times.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: When you watch the film, I believe you'd find a piece of yourself in these characters. Trisha, a hard-working actor who is working her restaurant job and balancing auditions, rejection, and personal difficulties, as well Sewer Bob, who has left corporate life in order to chase his authenticity. It's a story that shows how we can go through dark times but still be grateful for the good things that are happening to us. We know that life is made up of peaks and valleys, and this story acknowledges that we are strong enough to get through it all and that this duality of good and bad is what makes life beautiful.
How do personal and universal themes work in your film?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: In Dumpster Fire, we weave personal and universal themes to create a compelling narrative. The film explores the struggles of pursuing one's dreams while navigating the harsh realities of everyday life. Whether it's working side hustles or a nine-to-five job to make ends meet, many can relate to the journey of striving for something more. We emphasize that there is no shame in these struggles; they are part of the human experience.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Some of the themes in Dumpster Fire include:
Chase authenticity
Don't listen to the noise, follow your heart
It's okay to take a break, but get back on the horse and keep going
We all go through hard times, but the important thing is to not give up
Listen to your heart
Remember why you fell in love with your craft in the first place and allow yourself to reset. Resets are okay
Friendship is powerful, allow your true friends to be real with you, because they see how amazing you are
How have the script and film evolved over the course of their development?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: About a year ago, I found myself captivated by the first season of The Bear. It had been a while since a show had such a strong hold on me—I kept replaying the episodes in my mind. Then, one day, I opened my laptop, and the words for Dumpster Fire just flowed. It was one of those moments where inspiration struck, and the rest, as they say, is history.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Natalie wrote the script around 2022 and then the WGA strike happened, then the SAG strike. After two years, we are ready to rock and roll.
What type of feedback have you received so far?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: Initially, I was incredibly critical of my work and hesitant to share the script with anyone. Ironically, around that time, I was in frequent discussions with Alexandra Almendarez, who is cast as Trish in the film, about The Bear. Our conversations about the show actually inspired me to finally share the script with her. It just felt right—she embodied the essence of Trish so perfectly.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: We have received so much positive feedback! A lot of people are excited that it's based on The Bear! Others are excited to see me and Taylor Box share the screen. I'm excited to work with Natalie again, we've collaborated on several projects.
Has the feedback surprised or challenged your point of view?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: The feedback and involvement of others have challenged my perspective in profound ways. When Alexandra Almendarez joined the project and later partnered with Kevin Keeling from Take the World, the reality of Dumpster Fire being made really sank in. Their dedication and passion for the project were both gratifying and motivating.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Our feedback has been positive. We look forward to capturing the dark comedy elements of The Bear, as well as capturing the struggle, depth, and hope of our own plot.
What are you looking to achieve by having your film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: By making our film more visible on www.wearemovingstories.com, we aim to highlight the voices of emerging creators. Each of us brings a unique perspective and storytelling style to the project, and showcasing it on a platform like We Are Moving Stories allows us to amplify our collective voice and reach a broader audience.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: We would like to share this story with as many people as possible, all ages, demographics and communities. We would like to show the world a heartfelt, dark comedy that captures the human experience. We know that a lot of people can relate, and we look forward to sharing this story with the world.
Who do you need to come on board (producers, sales agents, buyers, distributors, film festival directors, journalists) to amplify this film’s message?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: We are currently crowdfunding to raise funds for this film. Every donation, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in bringing this project to life. Additionally, we kindly ask our peers to share the campaign link if they are unable to contribute financially. Your support in any form is greatly appreciated.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: We welcome those who'd like to support our production to please reach out, we'd love to hear from you. You can reach me via email at aalmendarez646@gmail.com or on my Instagram at @iamalexandraalmendarez
What type of impact and/or reception would you like this film to have?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: I am grateful to anyone who watches the film, whether online or in a theater. One positive response can make a significant impact and go a long way in validating the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the project.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: The impact this film will have will be the resonating theme that you're not alone. No matter how much we struggle, there is always something to be grateful for. That we can get through the hard times and life will be okay.
What’s a key question that will help spark a debate or begin a conversation about this film?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: A key question that could spark a debate or initiate a conversation about this film is: "Who was there for you during tumultuous times?" This question delves into the themes of support, resilience, and human connection, which are central to the film's narrative.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Often artists struggle with balancing their day jobs to support their dreams, and many people decide to let the dream go due to various circumstances. The question is, what are willing to do in order to fulfil your purpose in this life? Once you find your purpose, are willing to go to the ends of the earth to follow through and make it happen, no matter how long it takes, no matter how hard it is? Many of us are, I am willing to do what it takes. And it's not just a question for artists, but for everybody. Are you ready to step into the person you were born to be?

What other projects are the key creatives developing or working on now?
NATALIE RODRIGUEZ: Many of the key creatives on our team have collaborated on various projects in the past. Alexandra and I recently worked on a sequel to our animated short, "Matty Cat." Alexandra, in particular, is a rockstar with a constant stream of projects and classes. She's currently working on an upcoming feature film alongside her other commitments, showcasing her incredible work ethic and dedication. Additionally, Alex and Taylor Box, who plays Sewer Bob, worked together on a feature film that premieres this month, further highlighting the strong collaborations within our team. Kevin and I are also in pre-production for a psychological horror feature called "Inner Child." Despite his busy schedule on set or in prep, Kevin always makes time for catch-up calls and meetings, which I greatly appreciate. These are the types of individuals who not only inspire me but also what I consider to be lifelong partnerships.
ALEXANDRA ALMENDAREZ: Natalie and I are in post-production for Merry Christmas, Matty Cat, the 2D animated short which is the sequel to Matty Cat, which debuted at LA Comic Con. I've also just wrapped acting as one of the leads in the featurette, Moon River, directed by Paul Krueger. I am also acting as the lead in both a short film and a feature film later this year. Thank you!
